Acer Chromebook R13 brief review: The best laptop under $400 you can buy now

Chromebooks have quickly been among the most desired laptops in the market since they made their debut back in 2011. Google’s low cost laptops have long been good values thanks to their high stability and good battery life. However, most of today’s Chromebooks don’t support touchscreen.


Luckily, at this year’s IFA, Acer unveiled its new Chromebook R13. The new device comes with everything you expect from a Chromebook, but Acer has added some noteworthy features including Android and Google Play support alongside convertible, touchscreen display. Here is our brief review

  1. Hardware

If you are looking for a beautiful 1080p touchscreen laptop, Chromebook R13 should be your choice. It is a beautiful laptop honestly, with solid aluminum, which sports a 13.3-inch flippable display, offering comfortable on-hand sensation for watching videos. Beside that, Chromebook R13 includes a full sized USB 3 port and a USB-C 3.1 port for charging laptop and high-speed data transfer. The R13 also features an HDMI port and SD card slot for connectivity and storage expansion.

The Chromebook R13 offers multiple storage options (16, 32, or 64GB). In case of battery life, the new laptop offers up to 12 hours of battery life during a workday. The 13.3-inch screen flips a full 180-degrees, offering one of the best tablet experience ever.

Chromebook R13 is a beautiful laptop with a 360-degree hinge design. We also have a full sized HDMI port, but the touchscreen leaves fingerprints and smears thanks to its glossy finish.

  1. Performance

As its name suggest, the R13 runs Chrome OS, so you will find many features here that are now present on any other Chromebook in the market. According to Acer, the Chromebook R13 will include support for Android apps and Google Play Store through a long beta process. This means that users will be able to use both Android apps and Google Chrome apps on their device.

Under the hood, there is a MediaTek M8173C CorePilot quad-core processor along with 4GB of RAM, offering a smooth Chrome experience ranging from browsing internet to watching 1080p videos.

However, the Chromebook R13 lacks of apps that you may use daily including Photoshop and video editing tools. So if you are one of those who much involved in editing videos and photos, the R13 should not be your choice.

The Chromebook R13 is a cheap but good laptop. With a 399 USD price tag, you will have a beautiful laptop, acceptable keyboard, full connectivity options, fast performance and Android apps support (which it will get through beta channel).
