Alibaba a Chinese e-comerce giant, is about to launch a Netflix-like video streaming service. The streaming service will carry the name of ”Tmall Box Office”, and is said to combine HBO-like original video productions with content bought from China and abroad.  Currently in China, iQiyi and Youku Tudou (YouTube-style platforms) tend to dominate the market whereas ”Tmall Box Office” is excepted to break the norm.

“Our mission, the mission of all of Alibaba, is to redefine home entertainment,” company’s head of digital entertainment, Patrick Liu stated at a press conference in Shanghai today. “Our goal is to become like HBO in the United States, to become like Netflix in the United States.”

The service is rumored to launch in 2 months time.  Netflix itself is also considering an entry into China, a notoriously difficult task for foreign Internet companies.
