Google announced Pixel phones, ready to take on Apple iPhone 7

Google has just announced its highly-anticipated Pixel-branded phones at its hardware event in San Francisco. In reality, the new Pixel phones are not something new, as the rumors and leaks have already been floating around for months prior to the today’s unveiling.

Pixel and Pixel XL mark the first time Google brings its branding to its phones without being linked with another manufacturer, which allows Google to differentiate its own phones from other Android phones in the market. However, Pixel and Pixel XL unveiling puts an end to Google’s Nexus brand.

In reality, Nexus phones were Google’s first effort to get into the smartphone business, but low sales may lead to the today’s sad ending. Nexus phones were once fan-favorites thanks to their low price tag and crazy specs and there are still a lot of people who are still on the best Nexus devices.

In 2011, Google acquired Motorola and released a number of high-end and mid-range phones. However, Google made no mention of its possible Motorola phone at the event, suggesting that Google is planning to shut down Motorola phone program. The Pixel and Pixel XL are expected to be full competitors to the Apple iPhone this year. Besides, the new Pixel-branded phones is Google’s first step to develop its own products, as its Android partners have started creating their own OS to reduce their alliance on Google’s Android operating system.

The Pixel and Pixel XL come in two sizes with either a 5in or a 5.5in screen. Both are powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor and run Google’s newest Android software, Android 7.1 Nougat. Besides, there will be either 32GB or 128GB internal storage variants with unlimited cloud photo storage.

The pair offer up to 7 hours of battery life with 15-minute charge. Noticeably, the Pixel phones sport 12 MP rear cameras paired with large 1.55 micrometre pixels aiming to enhance low-light performance, promising to take down both Apple iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.

One of the most noticeable features of the Google Pixel smartphones lies in the new Google Assistant. According to Google, its new Google Assistant will replace Google Now and Google voice search which are currently available on most of today’s Android smartphones. The new Google Assistant can be accessed by saying “OK Google” or long-pressing the Pixel’s home button. With Google Assistant, Google is making your daily tasks much simpler and quicker.

The 5 inch Pixel will be priced at 599 USD with 32GB of storage and 699 USD with 128 storage, while the 32 GB and 128 GB Pixel XL models will cost 719 USD and 819 USD respectively. Both devices will be available through EE and Carphone Warehouse in the UK. You can also get the devices online from Google’s store. However, Google has not specified release date in the UK.

The Google Pixel and Pixel XL are among the most anticipated smartphones. With the unveiling of the Pixel phones today, Google is now officially entering the competitive smartphone market where Apple and Samsung dominate.
