Google sends out Android Nougat January security update for its Pixel and Nexus devices

Android Nougat has been here for a while and with it comes tons of major improvements and refinements over Android Marshmallow. Google has always been putting out excellent updates for its Android Nougat to improve user experience and expand its availability. Android Nougat is making its way into other top-tier smartphones in the market including Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge, LG G5 and more. Earlier this week, Sony became the first third-party manufacturer to bring Android 7.1.1 Nougat update to its Xperia X smartphones running on the Experiment Track.

One of the best things when it comes to Android Nougat is that Google rolls out a new Android security update on the first Monday of each month. But there’s no Android security update to be found this time. However, Google has published the Android Security Bulletin, which contains details of security vulnerabilities affecting Android devices. There are two patch level strings here, one will show the January 1 security update level and the other uses January 5.

Google has also made factory images and OTA zip files of the new update available for Google’s recently introduced Pixel and Pixel XL, as well as a wide range of devices including Huawei Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, HTC Nexus 9, and Asus Nexus Player. It appears that Google ignores Motorola Nexus 6. However, the Nexus 6 will be receiving the January security patches along with Android 7.1.1 Nougat update.

Last year, Google released its new smartphones called Pixel and Pixel XL, the first smartphones carrying Google’s branding. The new smartphones will be Google’s first step to eliminate its partnership with third-party manufacturers. The new pair come with several exclusive features including Pixel Launcher and Google Assistant.
