Windows 10 is the best-optimized Windows version Microsoft has ever released to the public. Windows 10 combines perfectly the best aspects of Windows 8 and Windows 7, while adding tons of new features to the operating system. Windows 10 Creators Update has finally landed in our shores, but it comes with the same old problem. Your old OS doesn’t get erased; rather, it still persists on your computer and uses up a huge amount of space.
In reality, Windows. old folder serves as a backup plan that allows you to restore your computer in case something goes wrong during the installation process. If you are satisfied with the new version of Windows, it’s a good idea to remove Windows.old folder to save some space. However, the process is different from deleting a normal folder. With that in mind, we believe that we can help you out.
In this step-by-step guide, we will run you through the steps to delete the Windows.old folder on Windows 10. Before we begin, make sure that your PC is now running Windows 10 or newer.
Windows includes a handy tool called Disk Cleanup, which aims to free up space on your computer’s hard drive. Basically, Disk Cleanup scans your hard drive for files that are no longer in use and removes all of them. In this case, you can use Disk Cleanup tool to delete the Windows.old folder without the need for a third-party app to be installed on your device. Here is how.
Step one: First off, you need to open File Explorer on your computer. To do this, just simply need to press the Windows + E to proceed
Step two: Once you are in, click This PC from the left-hand side, then right-click on the hard drive with the Windows 10 installation (typically the C: drive) and select Properties from the drop-down menu (You can go straight to the This PC by double-clicking the This PC icon from the desktop)
Step three: From the pop-up window, click the Disk Cleanup button and then hit the Clean up system files button
Step four: Next up, you simply need to check the box next to Previous Windows installation(s) and hit OK
Step five: Hit Delete Files, then click Yes and wait until the deletion process is completed (This could take a while).
Note: when you delete the Windows.old folder, you cannot go back to the previous version of Windows 10.
