How to fix Messages app crashing and freezing on iOS 10

The release of iOS 10 brings big new changes to iOS platform. One of the valuable changes is the Messages app.

However, iOS 10 is just a beta version, so it still remains many bugs. Especially, the Messages app is constantly crashing and get frozen . This issue is not fixed in the later update yet. Luckily, there are some simple tips to fix the issue.

  1. Reboot your iPhone/iPad

Whenever the Messages app has been freezing or frequently crashing, just reboot the device. Your messages app then will work normally.


To do this, press the Home button and the Power button at once for ten seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen. The issue is now solved.


  1. Use 3D Touch to access the conversation (only on 6s/6s plus)

Just press and hold the Messages app and then select the contact you want to send messages to the shortcut menu.


If you can launch Messages app, simply use 3D Touch for a specific contact. When the conversation thread displays, slide it up a bit.


Tap Reply to begin the conversation.


  1. Delete Conversation Thread


If a particular conversation crashes when you try to access it, just need to clean up the entire conversation thread.

Step 1: Tap and hold on any sent/received messages.

Step 2: Tap on More from the bottom.


Step 3: Tap on the Trash icon → choose messages you want delete → Tap on Delete messages when the pop-up displays.


If those are not important messages, you should tap on Delete All from the top left corner.

  1. Reset All Settings

If three solutions above cannot solve the issue, there is another ways to fix the crashed messages app, which   is resetting your iOS device.

Step 1: Go to Settings app on your device → Tap on General.


Step 2: Scroll down and tap on Reset → choose Reset All Settings.


Step 3: Tap on Reset All Settings again to confirm.


Advice for users

  • If all tips above do not work, you should re-install iOS 10 beta on your iPhone/iPad or you can also downgrade your device to the lower iOS version.
  • We recommend you to downgrade to iOS 9.3.3 and wait for the official iOS 10 version.
  • You should not install iOS 10 on your primary device you are using, as the iOS 10 version is still in beta. Just install for testing then downgrade to lower iOS for less bugs
