Microsoft: Its 4 most disappointing services and products

Microsoft is one of the biggest companies on the planet. The Redmond company is not just about Windows desktop operating system as they keep expanding their business in an attempt to compete with big names out there.

Microsoft offers a number of different services, including Xbox, Skype, Office, Surface, and Windows. The company has been working on improving their products for years, but not all of their services are worth your time. Some of Microsoft-branded services have seen a drop in quality recently, raising concerns among the community about the ability to create innovative products.

In the section below, we have compiled a list of Microsoft’s most disappointing services and products. Before we proceed, keep in mind that all the services below are now available for users worldwide.

  1. Skype

Skype is one of the most used messaging platforms out there. First introduced back in 2003, Skype quickly emerged as a dominant service that provides video chat and voice calls. Skype is now available in all platforms, including Android, iOS, Windows, and Xbox. Microsoft has been improving its own messaging platform for years to offer a better user experience. However, it seems that it’s not enough.

Skype is now falling behind other rivals out there, like Messenger, WhatsApp, and Snapchat. Microsoft’s messaging platform is widely used among companies worldwide, but it lacks exciting features and skills. Skype has not seen a big change in UI for years, as Microsoft only adds new colors and revamps some icons.

Microsoft has its own messaging service called GroupMe IM for years. Microsoft’s move aims to take on Messenger and WhatsApp on the market. It seems that the company is now pouring its love into GroupMe IM and ignoring Skype.

GroupMe IM is now available in multiple platforms, including Windows, Android, and iOS. Microsoft’s messaging service allows users to chat with their friends and family for free. Basically, GroupMe IM provides the same service as Skype provides, but it offers more intuitive UI. Skype is still the number one means of communication for business, as it offers a great video calling feature. However, we are expecting an overhaul coming in Skype. Let’s wait and see.

  1. Movies & TV

Microsoft has its own software for movies and TVs, allowing users to play videos or movies from their personal collection. The company’s move aims to offer a great movies & TV service across all devices that is ready to take on Netflix out there. However, there are a lot of things missing that prevent it from standing out on the market.

Firstly, you cannot access your favorite movies or TV shows on mobile phones, as there is no official app out there. In reality, rumors regarding an official movies & TV app have been floating around for months, hinting at the impressive features coming in the app. However, the release date remains unknown. Secondly, Microsoft confirms that the app now supports 4K content, but there still a lack of 4K movies or TV shows.

  1. Cortana

Cortana is Microsoft’s virtual assistant that hits Windows devices ranging from mobile to desktop. Cortana serves as the company’s main focus to compete with Amazon Echo and Apple Siri. However, the virtual helper has not seen a huge update in years, causing users to question the company’s ability to create an innovative personal assistant.

Microsoft is expected to bring Cortana support to other platforms. Last year, the company launched Cortana in Android, offering users more options to interact with apps. Some recent reports say that Microsoft is still improving Cortana in an attempt to create an ecosystem.

  1. Windows 10 Microsoft Store

Windows 10 Store serves as Microsoft’s gathering place of apps, videos, TV shows, and movies. The Redmond company has been improving its own Store since the launch day. However, the Store receives mostly negative reviews, with tech experts criticizing its poorly-made apps.

In terms of video games, multiplayer mode is a painful experience, as users cannot find multiplayer matches in some games. Besides, users have reported that they cannot play games due to crashes. Microsoft usually offers discounts for apps and games in the Store, but the situation is not improving. Microsoft has a lot of work to do to improve its Windows Store. Let’s wait and see.
