OnePlus 6: Everything we know so far

OnePlus ranks among the biggest smartphone brands in China. An OnePlus-branded phone offer stellar value in an affordable package, making it one of the best phones on the market. OnePlus has started to gain its popularity in the US market, thanks to the company’s endless efforts to improve its phones.

The OnePlus 5 and 5T flagship phones were a great success last year, with most critics praising their premium design and top-tier hardware. While many of us have not laid our hands on the OnePlus 5T, rumors regarding its successor have been floating around for months.

Some recent reports say that the successor to the OnePlus 5 and 5T will be called the OnePlus 6 and make its debut in the second quarter of the year. Tech experts say that the upcoming OnePlus 6 will come with premium features, while retaining the design from the 5T.

The OnePlus 6 is expected to compete directly with Apple’s new 2018 iPhone models and Samsung Galaxy Note 9 this year. In the section below, we are going to give you a preview of what OnePlus will include in its upcoming phone.

  1. A notch

A notch is not something new out there, as it has been sitting at the top of the iPhone X for months. A notch allows you to quickly check your new notifications, date/time and apps. Last month, OnePlus officially confirmed that the next OnePlus phone will feature a notch at the top of the screen, just like the iPhone X.

Apple is not the first smartphone brand to include a black notch across the top of its phone. However, Apple’s adoption of notch in iPhone X will see it used in other top-tier Android phones this year.

  1. Snapdragon 845 chip

OnePlus-branded phones are best known for their premium hardware, and there is no exception this year. OnePlus has recently confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 processor under the hood.

The Snapdragon 845 chip is now Qualcomm’s number one mobile processor, fueling Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. The new chip offers much-improved performance, ranging from video processing to playing heavy graphics games.

Some recent rumors say that the adoption of Snapdragon 845 chip allows for VR/AR support. Sources have suggested that OnePlus has been working on its own AR features, similar to iPhone X’s Animoji and S9 Plus’s AR Emoji. Besides, the Snapdragon 845 chip gives the phone enough power to handle new heavy tasks and apps, thus offering users more options to interact with apps and customize UI.

  1. Screen

Last month, OnePlus confirmed that the upcoming OnePlus 6 will feature a bigger screen. Some rumors have suggested that the device will sport a 6.2 inch display, making it the biggest OnePlus phone ever. Other rumors claim that the OnePlus 6 will feature an in-display fingerprint scanner. However, it seems that OnePlus needs more time to work on the new unlock measure.

Under-display fingerprint scanner is among the most anticipated features out there. The S9/S9 Plus were previously rumored to come with an in-display scanner, but it was nowhere to be found. Tech experts say that the OnePlus 7 might be the first OnePlus-branded phone to include this tech.

  1. Release date

OnePlus has not specified when the device will be announced to the public. However, the Chinese firm confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will be available in the second quarter of the year. Last year, OnePlus announced the OnePlus 5 in June, so we are expecting that the 6 will be unveiled at a launch event in June or July.

  1. Price

The upcoming OnePlus 6 will belong to the premium segment, so it won’t come cheap. Rumors claim that the OnePlus 6’s price ranges from $605 to $749 in the US. Last year, the OnePlus 5T price was exactly the same as the OnePlus 5’s at launch. This makes the upcoming OnePlus 6 more expensive than the last year’s models.

Tech experts say that the OnePlus 6 will be the most expensive smartphone OnePlus has ever made. Some recent reports claim that the device might cost more than $800 in the US. That won’t come as a surprise, seeing that the handset will include premium components.

  1. Camera and battery

Sources say that the OnePlus 6 will feature a dual-camera setup on the back, including 20MP and 16MP sensors. It remains unknown if there are any upgrades, but picture quality will be much improved. The front-facing camera will carry a 20MP sensor, up from 16MP on the 5T.

In terms of battery, a leaked specs list reveals that the device might come with a 3,450mAh battery, up from the 3,300mAh juice pack in the 5T. It remains unclear whether the device will support wireless charging. Last year, OnePlus removed the feature from the 5T, which is a little bit disappointing. Sources say that OnePlus has been working on wireless charging functionality for months, allowing for much-improved charging speed.

  1. A microSD card slot

OnePlus removed microSD card slot from the OnePlus 5T, instead offering two storage choices: 64GB and 128GB. The upcoming OnePlus 6 is expected to include a microSD card slot, offering a perfect option to expand their phone’s storage.
