How to Root Galaxy S9 / S9+ on Android Pie Firmware

Samsung has already pushed out the official Android Pie update for all Galaxy S9/S9 plus device. Along with Android Pie version, the update also comes with a completely new One UI layout developed by Samsung. Once you update your Galaxy S9/S9+ to this firmware, the root status would return to stock. In this case, you can read this post to get the root access again on your Galaxy S9 / S9+. It is important to note that you will need Magisk root utility to root your Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus. This utility is now very popular with all Android devices and fortunately, it works well with the Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ models.

Here is a step-by-step guide to rooting your Galaxy S9/ S9 Plus with Android 9.0 Pie firmware using Magisk utility through TWRP custom recovery.


  • This tutorial is only for Galaxy S9 / Galaxy S9 Plus models running on Android 9.0 Pie.
  • Your phone needs to be running on the latest Android Pie firmware

Steps to root Galaxy S9/S9+ on Android Pie firmware

You need a custom recovery installed on your Galaxy S9 / S9 Plus phone first.  You can download TWRP recovery as the link below

Step 1: First, download Magisk Root ( as well as for your phone

Step 2: On your phone, enable Developer Options by heading to Settings>About then scrolling down to Build Number. Tap on Build Number 7 times until you see You’re a developer message on the screen.

Step 3: Now, return to Settings app main menu and tap on Developer Options. From there, scroll down and toggle on OEM Unlocking.

Step 4: Connect your Galaxy S9 / Galaxy S9 Plus to the computer using a USB cable.

Step 5: Copy and paste the and files to the internal storage of your phone. Make sure they are stored in the root folder.

Step 6: Power your phone off and then disconnect it from the USB cable.

Step 7: Now, boot your phone into TWRP recovery mode. Press and hold Power + Volume Down + Bixby buttons at once until you see TWRP recovery screen.

Step 8: When done, tap on ‘Install’ button and browse to the  file that was copied to your phone memory.

Step 9: Confirm the installation by swiping on the “Swipe to Confirm Flash” option.

Step 10: When the installation is done, tap on Home to return TWRP recovery screen.

Step 11: Next, follow the same from Step 8 to install the file. Once the process is completed, simply reboot it.

That’s all! You have successfully rooted your Galaxy S9 / S9 Plus phone. You can download and install  MagiskManager app to check it.
