How To Use PS3 Controllers With Windows 10 PC

Windows PCs now limits controller support. Although the newest generation of console controllers can easily with Windows. However, the last-generation gamepads like the PlayStation 3 require custom drivers to be installed on your computer.

Previously, players usually used MotioninJoy to use Sony PS3 controller as a joystick on Windows PC. But unluckily, MotioninJoy was software that has been set as malware over the years.  However, you don’t need to infect your computer, there is now an open-source alternative, named ScpToolkit without using MotioninJoy. In this post, we’ll show the way to use your PS3 Controllers on your Windows PC with ScpToolkit software.

How to Install ScpToolkit On Your Windows PC

ScpToolkit requires modifying some system drivers so that the controller can work, so it’s the safe installation process. Read our instruction carefully, and don’t click anything you don’t know.

  • First, you need to download the latest release of ScpToolkit from Github page,
  • Once done, open up the setup program, agree to the Terms and Conditions. You’ll then be greeted with a dialog including a list of install options:

While you don’t usually use the Gamepad Analyzer and Debug Info Collector, you should still install everything else to avoid bugs

  • You now wait for a few minutes so that the installation process can complete.
  • Now, plug your PS3 controller into your Windows computer with a USB cable. After the utility is finished installing the toolkit, you will be prompted to run the driver installer.
  • Next, just click on “Run” and you will see a list which includes your controller.
  • Click on “Initialize All Connected Devices” button showing up on the screen. Simply install it, and then click “Next.” It will configure the controller that can be recognized as a PS3 controller.

  • You will see Bluetooth support in the next screen, which you don’t want since it requires a dedicated Bluetooth dongle. There will be a huge “WARNING” message on this screen, since installing it to a wireless mouse dongle will take you a very bad time.
  • If you want wireless support, you simply plug in the sacrificial dongle, and you need to make sure there is the only device in the list. All you need is to click on “Initialize All Connected Devices” option
  • If not, simply click on “Next” to skip this process.
  • Now, start installing a virtual Xbox 360 Controller driver to trick Windows into thinking your connected PS3 controller is an Xbox 360 controller. Doing so will help you play more games.
  • To install the Xbox 360 Controller driver, just click on “Install virtual Xbox 360 Controller driver

  • Once done, ScpToolkit will prompt to install a Windows Service to create a communication with the controller.
  • Finally, click on “Install Windows Service” and click “Next” to complete the install process.
