Windows 10 Spring Creators Update: Best features and changes

Windows 10 is the best desktop operating system Microsoft has ever released to the public. Microsoft has been working on improving Windows 10 since the launch day in an attempt to offer a better user experience. Windows 10 has been through several major software updates, with a lot of big features and changes.

Microsoft confirms that the company will release a major software update to Windows 10. Sources say that the update will be called Spring Creators Update, but the release date remains unknown.

In reality, the beta versions of Spring Creators Update have been available for months for testing. The final beta of the update gives us a sneak preview of what’s coming in the official release. In the section below, we have created a list of the best new features of Windows 10 Spring Creators Update. Before we proceed, keep in mind that Spring Creators Update is now in beta stages for developers.

  1. Timeline

Timeline is one of the biggest additions to Windows 10, as it shows a list of all apps and files you have accessed in the past 30 days. This comes in handy, as you can quickly re-open your old files or apps. In Microsoft Edge, you can quickly get thumbnails of the sites you have already visited so you can get back to them anytime.

However, Timeline only works in some Windows’s built-in apps, meaning that you won’t be able to open your previously-visited sites in Chrome or Firefox. We expect that Microsoft will expand Timeline support for third-party apps when the final build of the update is released.

By default, Timeline is enabled in Windows 10 Spring Creators Update, but you can turn it off. To do this, head to Settings > Privacy > Activity history and turn off the switch under Show Activities from accounts.

  1. Nearby sharing

Spring Creators Update introduces a new feature, called Nearby sharing. As the name implies, the feature allows you to share files between nearby PCs. In reality, Nearby sharing works very similar to Apple AirDrop, as both require Bluetooth connection.

To enable this feature, open Settings on your computer, and then select System. After that, hit Shared experiences and select your sharing level (Everyone nearby or My Devices only). Besides, you can quickly turn on/off feature from the Action Center in Windows 10. Keep in mind that Nearby sharing requires both PCs running Spring Creators Update and Nearby sharing enabled.

  1. Focus assist

Windows 10 has its own Do Not Disturb mode called Quiet hours. As the name suggests, the feature automatically turns off distracting notifications and alerts, so you can stay focused in schools or your work.

In Spring Creators Update, Quiet hours feature has got a new name, called Focus assist. The Do Not Disturb mode in Windows 10 is now a bigger deal than you expect. There are now three options to pick from, including Off, Priority only, and Alarms only.

If you select Priority only, Focus assist will turn off notifications or alerts except for apps and people in your priority list. Alarms only option will disable all notifications except for alarms. To enable Focus Assist, open Settings, then select System and tap Focus Assist.

  1. Password recovery

Spring Creators Update introduces a handy recovery password feature. As the name suggests, the feature lets you recover your missing password for your local Windows accounts. To access password recovery, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and hit Update your security questions under the Password section. Once you are in, you can set up three security questions for your local admin account. This is a great addition to Windows, as it helps recover your password in case you happen to forget it.

  1. Choose GPU

With Spring Creators Update, you can easily select your graphics card for relevant apps. This comes in handy for those users who own laptops with dual graphics cards. To switch between GPUs in Windows 10 Spring Creators Update, open Settings, then select System and hit Display. Now just simply click graphic settings and choose an app to set preference.

  1. Mute tabs in Edge

With Spring Creators Update, you now can quickly mute tabs in Edge. Muting feature is one of the most anticipated features among Windows community.  Microsoft is fully aware of that and finally adds it to its own OS to catch up with Google Chrome and Firefox. To mute tabs in Edge, you simply click the speaker icon. Hit the speaker again to unmute.

Spring Creators Update is now available for those users who have already joined the Windows Insider Program. Keep in mind that the update is still in beta stages, so it may include bugs and errors. We recommend you make a full backup of your computer in case something goes wrong during the process.
