Xiaomi gains top spot in China’s smartphone market

According to research firm Canalys, Apple lost its top spot place in China’s smartphone market. Local brand Xiaomi regains the title of the country’s smartphone market share leader, by getting 15.9 percent of shipments during the second quarter of 2015. The research firm ranked Huawei in second position with 15.7 percent and Apple in third with Samsung and Vivo ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.

It is not clear how Xiaomi managed to become the king of China’s smartphone market, but new smartphones like the Mi Note likely helped.

“Competition among major brands has never been so intense,” Wang Jingwen, an analyst at Canalys, said in the statement. “Xiaomi is under immense pressure to maintain its top position in the quarters to come.”

Only time can tell whether Xiaomi will manage to keep the leadership with Apple, Huawei and Samsung trying to steal the title.
